Body Cameras Show Des Moines Police Catching Children From Burning Building

Des Moines Police hailed as heroes after catching kids being tossed out window to escape fire

Three Des Moines police officers are being hailed as heroes after they caught three children who were tossed out of a third floor apartment building during a fire early Tuesday morning.

"I got 'em, yup. Drop 'em," one officer can be heard yelling while sirens wail in the background. "Keep goin'. I got 'em. I got 'em."

The three officers sprang into action while waiting for firefighters to arrive at the fire at an apartment complex around 3 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived, they were unable to reach the third floor because of heavy smoke that had permeated the building.

"Senior Police Officers Cole Johnson, Craig Vasquez, Tyler Kelley, and Casey Sanders quickly positioned themselves outside the building, and caught children that were dropped to them from a 3rd floor window. All are well..." the department wrote on Facebook.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.

Firefighters were able to get a quick handle on the fire, and contained the blaze to two third-floor apartments. Everyone was able to get out safely, authorities said. Investigators aren't sure how the fire started because the room where the blaze originated was badly burned, making it difficult for authorities to make a quick determination.

Senior officers Cole Johnson, Craig Vasquez, Tyler Kelley and Casey Sanders were all given a shout-out in the Facebook post by the department.

"Please join us in thanking these officers, and those who serve with them, for leaving their homes every day to help make Des Moines the safe and secure city that it is!" the department wrote.
