Disney Releases Sneak Peek of Avengers Campus, & Disney+ at D23!

Disney superfans have flocked to Anaheim, California where they're getting a sneak peek at some of the most hotly anticipated shows, toys, and even a new land being built in Disneyland during the three-day D23 convention, a biennial celebration of The Walt Disney Company and all the movies, TV series and theme parks under its umbrella.

Fans of Star Wars got their first look at Disney's brand new Star Wars series: The Mandalorian, which will follow the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett, around the galaxy, far, far, away. The series, created by Jon Favreau, stars Games of Thrones star Pedro Pascal as the titular character who is a "lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy." The series reportedly takes place between the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi and before the events in The Force Awakens. Nick Nolte, Werner Herzog, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, and Giancarlo Esposito also star in the highly-anticipated Star Wars vehicle.

The show is scheduled to begin streaming on November 12, when the service goes live for audiences across the world. Up to seven profiles will be reportedly allowed for each subscription, which will cost $6.99 a month, or in a bundle along with Hulu and ESPN+ for $12.99 a month (international pricing will vary). The service will be available on a variety of smart TVs, as well as other devices such as Apple TV, Roku and Chromecast. Users can also watch using their XBox One and Playstation 4.

The service will reportedly host more than 7,500 television episodes, and will also include 400 older films from the Disney catalog. More than 25 original series and 10 original films, documentaries and specials are scheduled to premier in its first year on the new channel.

So far, there's no word on whether Disney+ will be available to those with an Amazon Fire or Fire TV.

Several other shows were given the chance to shine, including what Disney is calling the "start of something new" for the High School Musical franchise, as well as a quirky new show called "The World According to Jeff Goldblum." A new take on 'Lady and the Tramp' is also scheduled to begin streaming on November 12.

Among the other shows already announced by Marvel, including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and the 'What If' series, which is an animated original series giving alternative story lines for some of your favorite Marvel characters in the MCU.

Several other shows were announced for the first time at D23 on Friday, including:

  • Ms. Marvel - which will focus on the adventures of Kamela Khan, a Pakistani student from New Jersey.
  • She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters (Bruce Banner's cousin in the comics) the hulked-out superhero lawyer is headed to Disney+.
  • Moon Knight, an action adventure series about a mercenary who was left for dead and may or may not be infused with powers.

Fans also had the opportunity to check out a preview of the brand new campus coming to Disneyland California Adventures resort in California. According to the lore behind the 'Avengers Campus' is that the Avengers have set up spots across the world to recruit 'special' people to join their ranks - that is, anyone who attends. The land will be tied to several other Disney properties in Paris and Hong Kong.

Also available at the new realm, a retail store, a character meet-and-greet area, as well as a microbrewery. It's part of a larger effort by Disney to infuse the Avengers in several of their other parks around the world, including Hong Kong and Paris.

Robert Downey Jr. was one of several celebrities who were honored Friday morning. Singer-actress Bette Midler, actor-filmmaker Jon Favreau, Darth Vader voice James Earl Jones, “Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer and singer Christina Aguilera were all honored as Disney Legends, which is a celebration of Disney creators and business leaders.
