Dr. Anthony Fauci said that he would resign as Chief Medical Advisor to the President of the United States if Donald Trump wins the presidential election in 2024.

Fauci was named to the post in 2021 and has also served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984.

If Trump were to return to the White House as president, and COVID is still a threat, or there is some other public health emergency, would you have confidence in his ability — would you have confidence in his ability to deal with a pandemic of this nature?" CNN host Jim Acosta asked Dr. Fauci. "Would you want to stay on in your post?"

Dr. Fauci didn't hesitate and said he would step down from his post if Trump becomes president again.

"Well, no to the second question," Fauci answered. "The first question, if you look at the history of what the [COVID-19] response was during the [Trump] administration, I think at best you could say it wasn't optimal."

"And I think just history will speak for itself about that," he added.

Dr. Fauci did not say if he also planned to leave the NIAID.

While Trump has not officially declared that he will seek the Republican nomination in 2024, he has been hosting rallies around the country and has endorsed several Republicans who have won their primary elections.
