Man Accused of Scalding Girlfriend's Dog

Two teenagers in Chino Hills say they were in a park when they suddenly heard a dog whimpering.

As they looked around to find the dog, they saw a man on a nearby apartment balcony holding a tea kettle over a caged dog.

They pulled out their phones and recorded the man pouring water on the dog at least FIVE times. Each time the dog, named Sophie, yelped in pain.

The teens called police, who tracked down the apartment and went to do a welfare check.

Enping Qu, 22, answered the door of the apartment and let Deputy Dan Renear and his trainee in where they found Sophie, still wet and warm, in the cage on the balcony.

According to the San Bernardino SunDeputy Dan Renear said he also located the tea kettle.

"When I touched it, that thing was still scorching hot. I couldn't even put my hand on it."

Renear said that Qu spoke little English, so they had to use the translator on their phones to communicate with him.  They were able to determine that the dog was Qu's girlfriend's, who was not home at the time.  He told the officers first that he gave Sophie a bath earlier and that he meant to use cold water.  But officers say none of those excuses matched up to what they found at the scene.

Renear said he called the Inland Valley Humane Society, and when they arrived on scene and tested the water temperature, it was still more than 120 degrees.

The Inland Valley Humane Society took possession of Sophie and police arrested Qu on suspicion of animal cruelty. He was released on bail.

The Humane Society says that Sophie is burned, scared and traumatized, but she will make a full recovery.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Sophie may be returned to her owner.
