Florida Seeks to Require Parental Consent for Teen Abortions

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Announces Proposal To Increase Minimum Salary For Florida Teachers

A controversial Florida bill that seeks to require parental consent for teen abortions is now one step away from becoming law.

The state Senate voted to sign off on the law in a late Thursday night session. It will now be sent to Governor Ron DeSantis for final approval.

"When we look at common practice in the medical field, in the state of Florida, and how minors are treated, it is common practice that parents have to give consent," says Republican Representative Jennifer Mae Sullivan.

However, not everyone shares Sullivan's view of the controversial bill. Amy Weintraub, the program director of Progress Florida's Reproductive Rights Program, says the bill's passage is just another step toward outlawing abortion. "It is just pretty clear what they're trying to do," she says. "They’re anti-abortion extremists and they want to end abortion access for all people in Florida."
