A purported Russian missile landed on a farm in Poland, killing two people, CNN reported. The missile strike comes as Russia has stepped up its bombing campaign against Ukraine after retreating from the city of Kherson last week.

Fighter jets were launched in response to the missile strike, which occurred around the same time that a barrage of missiles struck the Ukrainian city of Lviv.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has convened an emergency meeting with the Committee of the Council of Ministers for National Security and Defense Affairs. An official said that information would be provided after the meeting.

Under Article 5 of the NATO treaty, any attack against one NATO Ally is considered an attack against all Allies.

U.S. Defense Department Press Secretary Brigadier General Pat Ryder said the U.S. is "aware" of the reports but cannot corroborate them at this time.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that "NATO is monitoring the situation.:

"Spoke with President Duda @prezydentpl about the explosion in #Poland. I offered my condolences for the loss of life. #NATO is monitoring the situation, and Allies are closely consulting. Important that all facts are established," Stoltenberg wrote on Twitter.

Russia pushed back against the reports in a statement on Telegram.

“The statements of the Polish media and officials about the alleged fall of ‘Russian’ missiles in the area of the settlement of Przewodow, is a deliberate provocation in order to escalate the situation,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said, according to NBC News.
