Segway has announced a recall of approximately 220,000 scooters sold across the United States due to a fall hazard that has resulted in user injuries. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the folding mechanism in Segway’s Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters can fail during use, causing the handlebars or stem to fold unexpectedly. This defect has led to 68 reported incidents, with 20 resulting in injuries ranging from abrasions and bruises to broken bones.
Consumers who own these scooters are advised to stop using them immediately and contact Segway for a free maintenance kit. This kit includes tools and instructions to inspect and adjust the scooter’s locking mechanism as needed. Segway emphasizes that no returns or replacements are involved in this recall.
The affected scooters were manufactured in China and Malaysia and sold at major retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club, as well as online at Segway.com and Amazon.com, between January 2020 and February 2025. Prices for these scooters ranged from $600 to $1,000.
Segway has stated on its website that the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening, depending on riding conditions.
