U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden is now a Russian citizen.
The former U.S. intelligence contractor, who's been hiding out in Moscow since leaking secret National Security files in 2013, was granted citizenship on Monday by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Snowden's attorney says the 39-year-old's wife, who gave birth to their first child in 2020, will apply for citizenship as well.
While the move means Snowden is a lot less likely to be prosecuted for his crimes, it also makes him eligible to be drafted into the Russian military as Putin continues to mobilize reservists for what he's calling a "special military operation." Every Russian man under the age of 65 is considered eligible for the country's draft.
